A wave of pride sweeps through the streets of Ahmedabad today! Our beloved heritage city has been crowned as the cleanest big city in India in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards, topping the list among cities with over 10 lakh population. This remarkable achievement is not just a feather in our cap – it's a testament to what we can accomplish when government, civic bodies, and citizens come together with a shared vision.

How Ahmedabad Earned This Golden Recognition

The path to this national honor wasn't built overnight. It's the result of years of dedicated work by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), backed by smart planning and the unwavering support of our citizens.

The AMC's Game-Changing Initiatives

Revolutionary Door-to-Door Collection System Since August 2024, AMC has achieved something extraordinary – daily garbage collection from 25 lakh properties! This massive operation runs smoothly with 1,850 GPS-enabled vehicles and a dedicated team of 9,000 sanitation workers who work tirelessly to keep our city clean

Technology Meets Cleanliness Our city doesn't just look clean – it's scientifically clean. AMC has implemented a data-driven, technology-backed waste management strategy that includes mechanical road sweepers and detailed cleanliness mapping of over 43,000 points of interest across the city. As Vijay Mistry, director of AMC's solid waste management department, proudly shares, this systematic approach has kept Ahmedabad visibly cleaner than ever before

Smart Waste Solutions AMC didn't just manage waste – they transformed it. Legacy waste has been converted into refuse-derived fuel and construction materials, proving that Ahmedabad doesn't just clean up – it innovates. Remarkably, we're the only city in India that successfully recycles close to 1,000 tonnes of building debris!

Community-Driven Awareness Campaigns The 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' and 'My Thaili' drives have become household names, with self-help group women leading the charge in neighborhoods across the city. These campaigns have made sustainable practices a part of everyday life for thousands of families.

Complete Sanitation Coverage The inspection team observed that 100% of households and commercial establishments either have proper sewerage connections or scientifically designed twin pit or soak pit systems. Additionally, 100% of faecal sludge is treated scientifically, and all completed toilets have water available at the source

Exceptional Scoring Ahmedabad scored an impressive 1,248 points out of 1,250 in 'Direct Observation', becoming one of the highest-scoring cities. More than 99% of toilets were found to be user-friendly for men, women, children, and disabled people, with proper lighting, ventilation, water supply, and electricity connections.

Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani rightly credits the strong foundation laid by former commissioner M Thennarasan for this national recognition. "This is not just a win for AMC but for every citizen who participated in the city's cleanliness journey," he said

Our Collective Responsibility Continues

This achievement belongs to all of us – every shopkeeper who keeps their storefront clean, every family that segregates waste properly, every citizen who chooses not to litter. But with great recognition comes great responsibility. This title isn't just something we've won – it's something we must continue to earn every single day.

Steps to take as a civil & responsible citizens!

Say No to Spitting Our roads, walls, and public spaces deserve respect. However we're travelling (walking, driving, or traveling by bus or rickshaw), let's commit to keeping our spit to ourselves. It not only spoils the beauty of our city but also spreads diseases and creates an unhygienic environment for everyone.

Keep Our Streets Litter-Free Those empty chip packets, water bottles, or food wrappers in your hand or car? They belong in dustbins, not on our streets. Every time we resist the urge to throw something out of our car window or drop it on the road, we're protecting the cleanliness that has earned us national recognition.

Respect Public and Private Spaces Our walls, both public and private, are not canvases for random writing or advertisements. Let's keep them clean and unmarked. The same goes for open spaces – they should remain green and clean, not dumping grounds for our unwanted items.

Practice Everyday Cleanliness Habits

  • Segregate waste at home

  • Keep your own' bag when you go shopping

  • Report broken streetlights or overflowing dustbins to AMC

  • Report Potholes to Amc by http://www.amccrs.com/AMCPortal/View/ComplaintRegistration.aspx

  • Encourage your neighbors and friends to maintain cleanliness

  • Support local cleanliness drives and community initiatives

A City of Pride, A Future of Promise

The Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Mission, saw participation from 4,589 cities across India. Among all these cities, Ahmedabad stood tall – not because of luck, but because of hard work, smart planning, and community participation.

This recognition positions us beautifully for the future. As we celebrate today, let's also pledge that tomorrow's Ahmedabad will be even cleaner, even more sustainable, and even more liveable.

Remember, every small action counts. When you choose to properly dispose of waste, when you keep your surroundings clean, when you participate in community cleanliness drives, you're not just maintaining our city's honor – you're building a legacy for future generations.

Ahmedabad's journey from a developing city to India's cleanest big city is a story of transformation, dedication, and collective will. Let's ensure this story continues to inspire not just Gujarat, not just India, but the world.

Together, we built the cleanest city in India. Together, we will keep it that way.
